Health Minister Reverses Decision to Remove Chandpur Civil Surgeon Following Surprise Hospital Inspections

Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain Bakul reversed his decision to withdraw the Civil Surgeon of Chandpur just two hours after initially ordering the disciplinary action during a surprise visit to the district on Sunday.

The Minister arrived at the Haimchar Upazila Health Complex at approximately 10:30 a.m. During his inspection, he discovered several irregularities and instances of mismanagement, specifically noting a lack of anti-rabies vaccines. Following these findings, he immediately contacted the Ministry of Health and ordered a “stand release”—an immediate transfer—for Chandpur Civil Surgeon Mohammad Nur Alam Din.

However, the situation shifted by 12:30 p.m. when the Minister visited the Chandpur 250-bed Government General Hospital. After holding discussions with the Civil Surgeon at the facility, the Minister opted to withdraw the transfer order.

While touring the 250-bed hospital, which included inspections of the wards and kitchen facilities, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the hospital’s overall maintenance. He told reporters at the facility’s conference room that he had visited many hospitals across the country but had not encountered an environment as clean or well-managed as the Chandpur General Hospital.

The Minister pledged to address outstanding challenges at the facility, including infrastructure limitations, staffing shortages, and the requirement for an Intensive Care Unit. Furthermore, he committed to the swift establishment of a 10-bed kidney dialysis center and the provision of a river ambulance to improve local emergency services.

Local officials and dignitaries were present during the visit, including Member of Parliament for Chandpur-3 Sheikh Farid Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner Ahmed Ziaur Rahman, Municipal Administrator Md. Ershad Uddin, and Hospital Superintendent AKM Mahbubur Rahman.

Following the event, Civil Surgeon Mohammad Nur Alam Din explained that the Minister’s initial frustration stemmed from the stock-out of rabies vaccines at the Haimchar facility. He confirmed that the Minister accepted his explanation and subsequently pardoned him.
