Former minister M.A. Mannan’s ex-aide jailed in Sunamganj attack case

A local court in Sunamganj has ordered Hasnat Hossain, the former personal assistant to ex-planning minister M.A. Mannan, to be sent to jail following his surrender in a case filed under the Speedy Trial Act. The court of Judge Nurul Haque denied Hossain’s bail plea on Wednesday after he appeared to face charges related to the violent suppression of student-led protests earlier this year.
Hossain, who also served as the general secretary of the Shantiganj Upazila Awami League, had been in hiding since the collapse of the Awami League government. His confinement follows a series of legal actions taken against high-ranking officials and their associates from the previous administration.

The case stems from an incident on August 4, 2024, when protesters in Sunamganj town were subjected to an armed attack. According to the case documents, Hafiz Ahmed, the brother of an injured victim named Jahur Ahmed, filed the complaint on September 2 at the Sadar Model Police Station. The lawsuit names 99 individuals as defendants, including former planning minister M.A. Mannan and Nurul Huda, the former chairman of the Zila Parishad and district president of the Awami League.
Public Prosecutor Md. Kamal Hossain confirmed the court’s decision, noting that the charges involve serious allegations of inciting and participating in violence against civilians. M.A. Mannan, who was previously arrested in connection with the same case, has since been granted bail.
