Centennial mango tree of Bhairavatir

Bhairava flows from north to south. After crossing a long distance, the river took a sudden turn and turned eastward. A little further the river takes a slight bend towards the north-east. This turning point is called Dewapara. There are numerous trees on both sides of the road next to Bhairav. The trees seem to compete with each other. But one tree surpasses all trees. The tree can be seen from far away.
A mango tree stands as a witness of time on the banks of the Bhairab in this Dewapara village of Sridharpur union of Abhaynagar upazila of Jessore. This tree can be seen after walking approximately 200 meters along the paved spiral road from Bhairav river.

There are different opinions among the people of the area about the age of the mango tree. Some say it is more than 100 years old. Some say 150. According to many, the tree is more than 200 years old. However, no matter how much they disagree about the age of the tree, they do not disagree that the tree is a centenarian. The identity of the tree is therefore centenary mango tree.
42 percent of the land is covered with ancient trees. The height is about 80 feet. The width of trunk is about 15 feet. This place is now owned by Abul Kasem Molya and his brothers.

Abul Kasem Molya (65) said, “The local mango tree was planted by one of our ancestors. My father, my grandfather also saw the tree in this form. The name of the tree is “Boale Mango”. The tree produces 200-250 tons of mangoes every year. I got maximum 450 maunds of mangoes from this tree.
Abul Kasem Molya said, ‘The mango tree is very old. very big The tree is our heritage. People come from far and wide to see the tree. That’s why we never think about selling the tree.
How old is the tree? When asked, Radharani Chakraborty (91), a housewife of Dewapara village, said that the age of the tree will be more than 200 years. He said, he was married at the age of 13. After marriage heard about the tree from husband and father-in-law. The tree still looks like it did before.
The Abhaynagar Forest Department inspected the mango tree on March 12, 2018 and prepared a report. The tree is reported to be approximately 300 years old. Apart from this, the report mentions the height of the tree as 80 feet and the girth of the trunk as 14 feet 6 inches.
M Manjur Hossain, botanist and retired professor of Botany Department of Rajshahi University, said, ‘There are two types of mango trees in our country – Guti and Kalmer mango trees. The tree that grows from the stem is called Guti Mango. This mango tree grows and separates from one tree to another. And the tree that produces a pen on the branch of the mango tree is called a pen tree. These mango trees have the qualities of the mother tree and each tree is one of a kind. In our country, small mango trees can live for more than 200 years.
Next to the centenary mango tree is a centenary almond tree. Many say that a tourist center can be built around the two traditional trees.
Deputy Ranger of Abhaynagar Upazila Forest Department Sameeran Biswas told Prothom Alo, “I will consult with the senior officials so that the forest department takes initiative in the conservation and maintenance of these mango and almond trees.”
