Five Injured in Attacks on BNP Activists in Khagrachari

Political tensions flared in Khagrachhari’s Guimara upazila on Wednesday night as opposition activists reported two separate attacks allegedly carried out by members of the banned Awami League. The incidents, occurring in the Boropilak and Bailachhari areas, have left six people injured, including one individual in critical condition.

According to local Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) officials, the first confrontation began around 9:30 p.m. after party members received reports of a clandestine meeting held by Awami League supporters at a private residence in Boropilak. When BNP members arrived to confront the group, a dispute ensued, escalating into a physical assault. Five local BNP and volunteer wing leaders were injured in the clash, including Hafchhari Union organizing secretary Jakir Hossain and various ward-level members of the Juba Dal and volunteer organizations. All five received initial treatment at the Guimara Upazila Health Complex.

A second, more severe attack was reported roughly thirty minutes later in the Bailachhari area. Local BNP leadership alleged that activists associated with the banned student wing, the Chhatra League, targeted a ward-level volunteer party president, Mohammad Omar Faruq Babu. The victim sustained a serious head injury and was subsequently transferred to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital for specialized treatment.

Dr. Ripal Bappi, the resident medical officer at Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital, confirmed that the patient remains under observation. He noted that the injury, located at the back of the head, appears to have been caused by a heavy, blunt object.

In response to the violence, Guimara upazila BNP president Saiful Islam and general secretary Mahbub Ali issued a joint statement condemning the acts. The party leaders characterized the assaults as premeditated and demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

Police response to the unrest has been limited thus far. Guimara Police Station officer-in-charge Md. Sohrawardi stated that while he is aware of the situation in Boropilak, he has received no formal information regarding the assault in Bailachhari. He encouraged the victims to file written complaints, pledging that authorities will conduct a thorough investigation and initiate legal proceedings once official reports are received.
