Government appoints new Sylhet deputy commissioner following abrupt transition hurdles

The Bangladeshi government has appointed Abdullah Al Mamun, a deputy secretary at the Information and Communication Technology Division, as the new Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sylhet, marking the latest shift in a series of administrative adjustments for the district. The decision was formalized through a notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on Thursday.
This appointment follows a period of instability regarding the district’s leadership. On June 21, the government recalled the former Sylhet Deputy Commissioner, Sarwar Alam, reassigning him to the Ministry of Public Administration. One week later, the government named Mu. Reza Hasan, then the Deputy Commissioner of Cumilla, as his replacement. However, Hasan never assumed the role in Sylhet after relinquishing his duties in Cumilla, where a successor has since been appointed.

Local political sources suggest that Hasan’s initial appointment faced resistance, as local ministerial officials reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the selection. These concerns were communicated to the Ministry of Public Administration, fueling speculation that a further change in leadership was imminent.
