Ekta Express derailment severs rail link between Dhaka and northern Bangladesh

Rail connectivity between northern Bangladesh and the capital, Dhaka, remains suspended following the derailment of the Ekota Express passenger train on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the Dahorshala area of Natore’s Lalpur upazila, as the train, traveling from Dhaka to Panchagarh, was moving between the Ishwardi Bypass and Ajimnagar railway stations.

Four carriages of the intercity train slipped from the tracks, effectively severing the primary rail link to the northern region. Authorities confirmed that while the northern route is paralyzed, the tracks serving the southern region remain unaffected, allowing trains bound for Khulna to continue operating on their regular schedules.

Emergency response teams were dispatched from the Ishwardi locomotive shed shortly after the derailment occurred. According to Abdul Alim, the station master on duty at Ishwardi Bypass station, recovery operations were launched before sunset.

Railway engineers and maintenance crews are currently working at the site to clear the tracks and restore transit services. While officials remain on the scene to oversee the repair efforts, they have cautioned that the process will require significant time before standard operations can resume.
