Bangladesh to Observe Ashura on July 17 Following Moon Sighting

The holy moon of Muharram was sighted across Bangladesh on Tuesday evening, marking the beginning of the new Hijri year on Wednesday, June 17. Consequently, the holy Ashura will be observed on Friday, June 26.
The announcement was confirmed by the National Moon Sighting Committee following a meeting held at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka. Presided over by Mohammad Fazlur Rahman, an additional secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the committee reviewed reports from district administrations, the Islamic Foundation, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, and the Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARRSO) to verify the lunar sighting.
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, holds profound significance in Islamic history. The term Ashura, derived from the Arabic word for ten, marks the 10th day of the month. It is a day of deep reflection for Muslims worldwide, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), along with his family members on the plains of Karbala in 61 AH.
Beyond this tragic historical event, the 10th of Muharram is associated with numerous significant occurrences in Islamic tradition. Many observant Muslims mark the day by fasting and engaging in acts of devotion to honor the legacy of those who stood for truth and justice.
The high-level committee meeting saw the attendance of several notable figures, including Islamic Foundation Director General A. Salam Khan, the Khatib of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque Mufti Abdul Malek, and representatives from the cabinet division, the meteorological department, and various scholarly and religious institutions. Following a comprehensive review of the data, the committee officially declared the start of the month, finalizing the religious calendar for the coming days.
