Sarjis Alam accuses BNP of authoritarianism following targeted attack on NCP convoy in Sylhet

Sarjis Alam, a chief organizer for the National Citizens Party (NCP) in the northern region, has issued a stern warning to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), accusing its student wing of attempting to establish a new regime of tyranny. Speaking at the Sylhet Circuit House on Thursday, Alam asserted that if the BNP continues to stifle political competition, its downfall could be more severe than that of the ousted Sheikh Hasina administration.
The comments followed two separate attacks on Alam’s motorcade in Sylhet’s Golapganj upazila. NCP leadership reported that as Alam was departing a meeting with families of those killed during the July uprising, unidentified individuals chanting slogans threw bottles and stones at his vehicle, shattering the rear window. A second assault occurred in the Panchmail area, where NCP member Tareq Jamil sustained an eye injury after being struck. NCP leaders have explicitly blamed the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the BNP, for orchestrating the violence.
Alam displayed the injured party member to reporters as evidence of what he described as a “bloodthirsty” and “eye-hungry” culture within the BNP. He claimed that assailants armed with iron rods and machetes targeted their vehicles with the intent to kill, questioning whether the BNP aims to forcibly silence all political opposition through such tactics. He further expressed frustration over the lack of arrests following similar recent incidents in Habiganj.
In response to the allegations, Sylhet District JCD General Secretary Delwar Hossain denied any involvement, claiming that no JCD members were responsible. He suggested that the friction may have arisen because the NCP delegation failed to meet with injured individuals while visiting the area to speak with victims’ families.
Local authorities have characterized the violence as an isolated incident. Sylhet Superintendent of Police Chowdhury Md. Yaber Sadek confirmed that while the NCP’s event in Golapganj was peaceful, stones were thrown at their vehicles during departure. He stated that the police have launched an investigation into the attacks and vowed to take action against those identified as responsible.
Despite the violence, the NCP motorcade, led by party convener and opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam, continued its scheduled “July March” program, proceeding toward Kanaighat upazila. The party plans to hold further protest marches across Companyganj, Gowainghat, and Jaintapur upazilas in the coming days.
