Bangladesh PM orders renaming of Bogra unions following nepotism controversy

Prime Minister Tareque Rahman has ordered the renaming of two newly formed unions in the Bogura district following allegations that they were named after the sons of State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam. The directive comes after a public outcry over the naming of local administrative zones, which critics argued reflected personal nepotism rather than community identity.

The controversy centers on the restructuring of administrative units in Bogura’s Shibganj and the newly established Mokamtala upazilas. Under the initial proposal, four new unions were created, including those named “Mirbari,” “Shimanto,” and “Diganta.” Investigations revealed that “Mirbari” corresponds to the family home of State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, while “Shimanto” and “Diganta” share names with his two sons, Mir Shakrul Alam Shimanto and Mir Saklain Alam Diganta, respectively.

While the state minister defended the naming process in parliament, claiming the selections were the result of a local public hearing conducted by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer and the District Commissioner, he described the coincidence as a “miracle.” This explanation failed to satisfy public opinion, triggering widespread criticism across social media platforms and raising concerns among political observers regarding administrative accountability and the influence of senior officials in local governance.

Following the backlash, Prime Minister Rahman intervened to mandate a change. Bogura District Commissioner Md. Toufiqur Rahman confirmed that he received verbal instructions from the Prime Minister’s office to initiate the renaming process. He noted that official documentation regarding the changes is expected to follow, and the administration will now conduct fresh public hearings to ensure the new names reflect local consensus rather than individual influence.

The decision has been met with cautious optimism by the public. While many have used social media to praise the Prime Minister’s decisive action, others have utilized the event to call for broader reforms in how administrative structures are managed, questioning the effectiveness of ministerial oversight in preventing such incidents. The district administration intends to finalize the new names through a transparent, documented process before publishing the revised designations in an official gazette.
