Conjoined Twins Zainab and Umm-e-Kulsum Die at Dhaka Medical College Hospital

Conjoined twins Zainab and Umme Kulsum, who were undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), passed away on Wednesday afternoon.
DMCH Director Brigadier General Md. Asaduzzaman confirmed the deaths, stating that the twins shared a single heart, which also suffered from a congenital defect. He explained that these severe medical complications made survival impossible. The family members retrieved the bodies from the hospital late Wednesday night.
The twins were the children of Nahid Hasan and Sanjida Akter, residents of Bilgathua village in the Daulatpur Upazila of Kushtia. Born on May 4 at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, the infants were conjoined from the chest to the abdomen.
Following their birth, the financial burden of specialized medical care forced the parents to return to their village. The family’s plight gained public attention following a media report on August 11, which highlighted Nahid Hasan’s struggle as a shop employee to afford his children’s treatment.
The report reached the attention of the authorities, prompting directives for the Health Minister, Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain Bokul, to intervene. The Minister subsequently contacted the parents and ensured the twins were admitted to the pediatric ward of DMCH on Monday night.
Upon their admission, the Health Minister visited the hospital and pledged that the government would cover all medical expenses. Plans had been discussed to form a medical board comprised of local and, if necessary, international specialists to oversee the infants’ complex surgical care. However, the twins succumbed to their condition within two days of their admission.
