Court sends Khaja Habibullah Habib to jail in Billal Hossain Talukdar murder case

A Dhaka court ordered Khaja Habibullah Habib to be sent to jail on Wednesday in connection with the murder of Billal Hossain Talukdar, the former convener of the Ramna unit of the Swechchhasebak Dal. Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam issued the order after hearing the arguments from both the prosecution and the defense.
Sub-Inspector Shah Alam of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) prosecution wing confirmed the development. During the hearing, defense lawyer Iltutmish Saudagar Anny filed a petition seeking bail for the accused, but the state successfully opposed the motion, leading the court to deny the request.
The accused was arrested by the Detective Branch of police on August 7. Following his arrest, he was taken to the Ramna Model Police Station, where he reportedly fell ill late that night. He was subsequently admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for treatment. Once his condition stabilized, police presented him before the court.
Investigating officer Inspector Atiqul Alam Khandakar of Ramna Model Police Station informed the court that the accused must remain in custody to ensure a fair and thorough investigation into the case.
According to the case file, the victim, Billal Hossain, operated a restaurant business. The dispute began with his nephew, Mobarak Hossain, a trader at the Anarkali Market in Mouchak. One of the accused, Didarul Islam Babu, allegedly extorted money from street vendors and shopkeepers in the market under the guise of collecting electricity and waste management fees, which led to a confrontation with Mobarak.
On the evening of June 8, Billal was summoned to the area behind the Anarkali Market to discuss the dispute. Upon his arrival, Billal was surrounded and assaulted by Didarul and several other individuals. During the attack, Didarul allegedly ordered an associate named Riazul to stab the victim. Riazul reportedly complied, inflicting a fatal wound to Billal’s chest.
The victim was rushed to Islami Bank Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to the severity of his injuries, where he was pronounced dead at 9:45 p.m. Following the incident, the victim’s wife, Ambiya Khatun, filed a murder case with the Ramna Model Police Station, naming 21 individuals as suspects.
