Dhaka Court Grants Seven-Day Remand for Six Accused in Prime Minister Office Document Forgery Case

A Dhaka court on Wednesday granted a seven-day remand for six individuals accused of forgery, fraud, and the unauthorized use of the Prime Minister’s official seal, signature, and letterhead.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam issued the order following a hearing at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court. The confirmation was provided by Sub-Inspector Shah Alam of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) prosecution division.
The six suspects—identified as Faruk Hossain, Sakib Khan, Masum Munshi, Mir Touhidul Islam, Bokul Mondol, and Rafiqul Islam—were arrested and initially remanded to custody following a case filed at the Ramna Model Police Station. During the proceedings, defense lawyers requested bail and the cancellation of the remand plea, while state prosecutors successfully argued for custodial interrogation.
The arrests stem from the discovery of fraudulent documentation sent to the Secretary of the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment. The documents, delivered in official Prime Minister’s Office envelopes, allegedly contained forged signatures of the Prime Minister, various cabinet ministers, the Foreign Affairs Adviser, the Principal Secretary, and the Cabinet Secretary.
Authorities grew suspicious of the paperwork, leading the case to be referred to the Cyber and Special Crime Division of the DMP’s Detective Branch (DB). Investigators concluded that the suspects were part of a coordinated criminal syndicate that systematically used fabricated official stationery and seals to defraud individuals and private institutions.
The case was officially registered on August 5 by Sub-Inspector Raihanur Rahman of the Detective Branch. Following the initial detention of the suspects, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md. Shamim Sardar, formally requested a seven-day remand on August 7. The court scheduled the hearing for August 12, resulting in Wednesday’s decision. Investigators stated that they intend to begin questioning the suspects as soon as the formal court order is processed.
