Actor Kanchan Mullick Faces Vision Loss Threat

Prominent Bengali actor Kaushik Mallick, who faced public criticism for past remarks against striking doctors, has credited a laser treatment by an ophthalmologist with restoring vision in his right eye after years of progressive deterioration. Mallick, known for his comedic roles, shared his gratitude on social media Friday, celebrating the successful procedure that has significantly improved his sight.
The actor revealed that his right eye’s vision had been steadily declining, reaching a severe -8 diopter, while his left eye was at -3. Despite consulting numerous specialists, he was previously informed that correcting his right eye would require a staggering -18 diopter, deemed an impossible feat that he would have to endure for life.

Following his wife Sreemoyee Chattoraj’s advice, Mallick sought treatment at a renowned private eye hospital in the city. There, Dr. Samar Kumar Basak offered a hopeful prognosis, assuring him that laser surgery could restore his vision. The procedure proved successful, eliminating the need for glasses in his right eye and reducing his left eye’s power to -1.
Mallick expressed profound appreciation for Dr. Basak, describing him as “not just a doctor, but a new light, a new sun in my life” who has given him “the opportunity to see this world anew.” He reflected on wearing glasses since before primary school and the astonishment of seeing his world transformed after carrying them on his nose for over 40 years.

The actor’s current praise for the medical profession stands in stark contrast to his remarks during the R.G. Kar Hospital protests, when he questioned striking doctors’ entitlement to government salaries and bonuses while opposing the then-ruling Trinamool Congress party. Those comments led to widespread backlash from the public and his industry colleagues alike.
Mallick, who is no longer closely associated with the ruling party and lost his legislative seat after not being nominated in the recent elections, appears to have found a personal “new dawn” through the very profession he once publicly challenged. He now sees wearing glasses as merely an option, a dramatic shift from his lifelong reliance.
