A group of 101 prominent Bangladeshi citizens, including poet Nirmalendu Goon, has expressed deep concern over recent complaints filed with the International Crimes Tribunal against a cohort of journalists, writers, and cultural figures. The statement, released on Tuesday, warns that such legal actions risk infringing upon freedom of expression and undermining the professional security of those working within the arts and media sectors.

The controversy stems from a complaint lodged two days prior by an organization known as ‘Rashtrasanglap Forum,’ which alleged that 28 individuals—including two journalists and 24 theatre and performance artists—incited or assisted in committing crimes against humanity during the mass uprising of July 2024.

While acknowledging that individuals and organizations in a democratic state have a right to seek legal recourse, the signatories cautioned that this right must not be weaponized to harass professionals or intimidate those who hold dissenting views. The signatories emphasized that legal processes should not be initiated without rigorous verification of evidence and legal standing, noting that premature or unsubstantiated public complaints can cause irreparable damage to the social and professional reputations of those targeted.

The statement further warned that the ongoing trend of filing complaints against artists, journalists, and cultural figures creates a climate of fear, which is antithetical to the development of a healthy democratic environment. According to the signatories, freedom of expression is a fundamental prerequisite for the advancement of literature, journalism, and the arts, and its suppression fosters a culture of self-censorship.

The group concluded by urging state institutions to exercise extreme caution to ensure that the legal system is not exploited for personal, political, or vengeful purposes. They called upon democratic forces, cultural organizations, and the media to unite in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the fundamental rights of all citizens. The signatories represent a diverse cross-section of society, including academics, physicians, lawyers, publishers, and various other professionals.
