NCP leaders targeted in Habiganj as clashes erupt following political rally

A motorcade carrying National Citizens Party (NCP) leaders came under attack by activists associated with Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in Habiganj on Tuesday evening, escalating political tensions in the region. The incident occurred as NCP chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary and chief organizer for the northern region, Sarjis Alam, were traveling toward the local circuit house following a political rally held earlier in the afternoon.
The violence erupted near the Staff Quarter area of the city around 7:00 p.m. Witnesses reported that JCD activists began pelting Patwary’s vehicle with bricks as it moved through the street. Patwary managed to maneuver his vehicle toward the circuit house to escape the assault before eventually departing for Dhaka.

The situation intensified as the activists turned their focus toward the second vehicle in the convoy, carrying Sarjis Alam. Under duress, Alam sought emergency refuge inside a nearby Sonali Bank branch. Protesters surrounded the building, effectively holding him inside for approximately one hour. During the ensuing chaos, clashes broke out between NCP supporters who attempted to intervene and JCD members, resulting in approximately 15 injuries and bringing traffic on the city’s main thoroughfare to a standstill.
Local law enforcement intervened at approximately 8:00 p.m., dispersing the crowd and extracting Alam from the bank. He was subsequently escorted to the circuit house under police protection, where he remained late into the evening as JCD demonstrators continued to stage protests outside.

NCP leadership has formally accused the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of orchestrating the attack. However, JCD district general secretary Zillur Rahman denied the allegations, asserting that the violence was a reaction to provocative remarks made by NCP leaders during their rally, which he claimed agitated local party members.
