Reflecting on the unexpected turn of events, Maroof noted that her mother had initially expressed reservations about her traveling to Bangladesh, asking for a promise that she would not settle down there. Maroof’s personal history is intrinsically linked to Bangladesh; her father migrated from Jashore to Pakistan’s Punjab province in 1968, where he eventually settled.
