Sylhet administration requests BGB deployment ahead of planned political rallies

Sylhet District Administrator Abdullah Al Mamun has formally requested the deployment of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) forces across five sub-districts to maintain public order and address potential security risks this week. The request, submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs and BGB headquarters on Wednesday, follows an official recommendation from Superintendent of Police Chowdhury Md. Jaber Sadek.
The deployment, sought for Thursday and Friday, is timed to coincide with a series of protest marches organized by the National Citizens Party (NCP). According to local administrative sources, the BGB presence is planned for the sub-districts of Jaintiapur, Golapganj, Gowainghat, Kanaighat, and Companiganj, where the group’s “July March” events are scheduled to take place. The BGB units are expected to operate in coordination with district officials and local law enforcement.
NCP Sylhet district member secretary Kamrul Arif confirmed that the party has completed preparations for the two-day program, which will see central party leaders in attendance. The schedule includes meetings with families of victims from the July unrest alongside organized marches across multiple locations, starting Thursday morning in Golapganj, followed by events in Kanaighat and Osmaninagar.
The marches are slated to continue on Friday in Companiganj, Gowainghat, and Jaintiapur. Security officials stated that the BGB deployment is a proactive measure intended to ensure the stability of the local law and order situation throughout the duration of the political events.
