Bangladesh and India have reached a consensus to reset their bilateral relationship, aiming to move past recent tensions and address outstanding points of friction. The decision was formalized during a meeting in Dhaka on Wednesday between Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and the newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi.
Following the meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which also included State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam, Minister Rahman acknowledged that both nations recognize the existence of certain diplomatic irritants. He emphasized that resolving these issues is essential for future cooperation, noting that both he and the High Commissioner are committed to steering the partnership toward a new, constructive chapter based on the principles of sovereign equality.

The discussions touched upon broader regional cooperation, including a potential visit by Prime Minister Tareque Rahman to India for an outreach session of the BRICS summit. Minister Rahman stated that the government is currently reviewing the invitation and will make a decision in the near future. While the initial meeting served as a high-level exchange rather than a granular negotiation, the Foreign Minister confirmed that all pressing bilateral issues, including those related to political developments in both nations, would be addressed through ongoing diplomatic channels.
High Commissioner Trivedi described the meeting as a positive step forward, characterizing the atmosphere as warm and sincere. He underscored that the future of the India-Bangladesh relationship rests on mutual interest and strong people-to-people ties. Beyond diplomatic and political concerns, the two sides discussed a wide range of topics, including historical connections, shared culture, and cricket.

Addressing concerns regarding the renewal of the Ganges water-sharing treaty, the High Commissioner expressed confidence in the existing framework of working groups. He maintained that no issue is insurmountable when approached with mutual understanding and active communication.
Trivedi also highlighted the recent resumption of visa services as a critical development, noting that the move has been well-received by the citizens of both countries. As the new envoy settles into his role, both nations have signaled an intent to enhance engagement, focusing on a framework that prioritizes stability and long-term regional cooperation.
