Police recover weapon used in triple murder of elderly couple and domestic worker in Sylhet

SYLHET – Police have recovered the weapon allegedly used in the triple homicide that occurred at a residence in the Mitali Residential Area of Raynagar. The knife was retrieved on Thursday morning from a vacant plot adjacent to the crime scene, following information provided by the primary suspect, 35-year-old Babul Miah.
Manjurul Alam, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police, confirmed the recovery of the weapon. The bodies of the victims—90-year-old Abdus Sattar, his 76-year-old wife Suraiya Begum, and their 20-year-old domestic helper Tahmina Begum—were discovered by police on Wednesday morning inside their second-floor apartment.
Initial investigations indicate that Babul Miah, who works as a painter and butcher, had been in a romantic relationship with Tahmina for approximately 20 days. Babul had previously performed painting work at the victims’ residence. According to police reports, Babul entered the house Wednesday morning after Tahmina opened the door. An argument reportedly ensued, leading Babul to allegedly strike Tahmina with a sharp weapon. Police believe Abdus Sattar and Suraiya Begum were killed after intervening when they heard the helper’s screams.
Authorities stated that the suspect fled the scene via the balcony. He was apprehended later on Wednesday afternoon at the Akter Miah Colony in the Raynagar area, following a review of CCTV footage and the use of digital tracking technology. As of Thursday afternoon, no formal complaint had been filed, according to the Additional Deputy Commissioner. Khan Mohammad Mainul Zakir, Officer-in-Charge of the Kotwali Police Station, stated that the family is awaiting the arrival of Abdus Sattar’s son, who resides in the United States, before proceeding with funeral arrangements and the filing of a formal case.
In response to the incident, members of the Mitali Residential Area Social Welfare Association held a human chain in front of the Central Shaheed Minar on Thursday to demand a swift investigation and strict punishment for those responsible. Participants in the protest expressed skepticism regarding the narrative that a single individual could commit three murders and escape unnoticed.
Protesters urged law enforcement to investigate potential accomplices and explore other motives, including a long-standing property dispute involving land owned by Abdus Sattar in the Lamabazar area. Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury, who attended the demonstration, condemned the violence, describing it as an unprecedented and horrific event for the peaceful city.
