Court transfers Jagannath University student murder case to Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court

A Dhaka court has ordered the transfer of the murder case involving Jagannath University student and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader Md. Jobayed Hossain to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court for trial.
Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter issued the directive on Wednesday following a hearing. The court has scheduled September 13 for the framing of charges against the accused.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Kamal Hossain, an official from the court’s prosecution department, confirmed that the court accepted the charge sheet and formally transferred the case for trial. The victim’s elder brother and the plaintiff of the case, Enayet Hossain Saikat, was present in court, though no defense lawyers appeared during the proceedings.
Plaintiff’s lawyer Ishtiaq Hossain Jipu stated that the defense did not file any objections against the charge sheet. He expressed his client’s demand for a swift trial to ensure that those responsible for the murder are held accountable under the law.
Jobayed Hossain, a student of the 2019-20 academic session at the university’s Department of Statistics, was a member of the JCD Jagannath University unit’s convening committee. He was murdered on October 19 of last year while tutoring a student at a residence named Roushan Villa, located at 15 Noor Baksh Lane in Old Dhaka.
Following the incident, the victim’s brother filed a murder case at the Bangshal Police Station. After a nine-month investigation, the investigating officer, SI Md. Ashraf Hossain of Bangshal Police Station, submitted the charge sheet to the court on June 30.
The investigation revealed that the murder was not a spontaneous attack. The perpetrators reportedly spent nearly a month planning the crime, which included surveillance and reconnaissance of the location. Investigators identified the motive as complications arising from a romantic relationship and the fear of intimate photos and videos being leaked.
The three accused individuals currently in custody are Barjis Shabnam Borsha, 19, her boyfriend Mahir Rahman, 19, and Mahir’s associate Fardin Ahmed Aylan, 21. According to the investigation report, Mahir carried out the attack, Borsha orchestrated the murder plan, and Aylan served as an accomplice.
