Journalist and Student Leader Detained in Rangamati Transferred to Keraniganj Jail Under Cyber Security Act Case

A journalist and another individual, both detained by plainclothes officers in Rangamati, were transferred to the Keraniganj Central Jail on Wednesday following an appearance at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka. The two men were not granted a bail hearing during their court appearance.
The detainees have been identified as Saikat Ranjan Chowdhury, the general secretary of the Rangamati Journalists Union and a local correspondent for DBC Television, and Ali Akbar, the former general secretary of the Rangamati district unit of the Chhatra Dal.
The arrests stemmed from a case filed under the Cyber Security Act at the Shahbagh Police Station in Dhaka. According to reports, the case was initiated by Chandra Chakma, the central joint secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, against Ali Akbar. The operation was carried out by a team from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) on Tuesday afternoon near the Rangamati District Council building. Witnesses at the scene reported that Saikat Ranjan Chowdhury was taken into custody after he engaged in a verbal altercation with the officers during the detention of Ali Akbar.
Tushi Barua, the wife of Saikat Ranjan Chowdhury, expressed profound concern regarding her husband’s status, stating that the family has received no official communication from police authorities. She noted that a legal team has been assembled to challenge the detention in Dhaka.
Nazrul Islam, a lawyer representing Chowdhury, confirmed that the detainees were brought to the court holding cell on Wednesday. He stated that the legal team has filed a petition for bail, which is expected to be heard on Thursday. Lawyers Fazle Azim and Md. Main Uddin are also providing legal counsel for the defense.
When contacted, Rangamati Superintendent of Police Muhammad Abdur Rakib referred inquiries to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Moniruzzaman stated that the Detective Branch is handling all aspects of the investigation. Meanwhile, Niaz Mehdi, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, said he had no information regarding the individuals detained in Rangamati.
