Contractor and Engineer Assaulted in Anwara Over Extortion Demand

An engineer and a business owner were assaulted by a group of men in the Rangadia area of Anwara Upazila on Wednesday morning, in an incident allegedly stemming from an extortion dispute.
The victims have been identified as Shahriar Amir, an engineer, and Delwar Hossain, the proprietor of the contracting firm Messrs FM Enterprise. The attack occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. within the Bairag Union.
According to Shahriar Amir, the assault was orchestrated by a man named Ali Hossain, who had been demanding a 50 percent share of the firm’s profits. Amir stated that Hossain, who identified himself as a member of the Juba Dal, had been soliciting extortion payments for an extended period. When the firm’s officials refused to comply with the demand, a group led by Hossain intercepted them while armed with indigenous weapons and initiated the physical attack.
Delwar Hossain described the ongoing harassment by Ali Hossain as intolerable, noting that the firm had been struggling under the pressure of these demands for a significant time prior to Wednesday’s violent escalation.
However, Haresh Ahmad, the convener of the Anwara Upazila Juba Dal, denied any organizational link to the accused. He stated that Ali Hossain holds no official position within the Juba Dal and claimed he had no prior knowledge of the extortion allegations.
Attempts to reach Ali Hossain for comment were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone remained powered off throughout the day.
Officer-in-Charge of Karnaphuli Police Station, Md. Ikhtiar Uddin, confirmed that law enforcement responded to the scene and conducted a search at the residence of the accused. Ali Hossain was not present during the police visit. Authorities have assured that legal proceedings will be initiated in connection with the attack.
