Chittagong Court Grants Five-Day Remand for Accused Terrorist Mubarak Hossain alias David Emon in Extortion and Bombing Case

CHITTAGONG — A Chittagong court on Wednesday granted a five-day remand for Mobarak Hossain, alias David Emon, in connection with a case involving the extortion, assault, and bombing of a businessman’s under-construction building in Hathazari.
Judicial Magistrate Lokman Hakim issued the order following a formal request from the police. Additional Superintendent of Police Kazi Mohammad Tareq Aziz confirmed the development, noting that the charges stem from an incident at a construction site in the Borodighir Par area, where the suspect allegedly demanded 5 million taka in extortion money. When the demand was not met, an attack and a series of cocktail explosions were carried out.
Emon, who was transported to the court from Chittagong Central Jail under heavy security, is a known associate of Sajjad Ali, an absconding underworld figure operating from abroad. Police reports indicate that Emon faces a total of 15 criminal cases. He was previously apprehended on July 29 while attempting to flee to India through Jessore alongside three accomplices. Following his arrest, he was remanded for 10 days in separate murder and arms cases filed in Fatikchhari.
Law enforcement officials describe Emon as a key operative responsible for executing the criminal agenda of Sajjad Ali, also known as Boro Sajjad. Investigators claim the Sajjad Ali syndicate maintains an active force of at least 50 shooters and associates, with Emon playing a central role in soliciting extortion payments from businessmen and expatriates. Emon is believed to be one of the top two leaders managing these activities alongside an associate identified as Mohammad Raihan.
A resident of Kanchannagar in Fatikchhari, Emon was formerly a cricket enthusiast who trained with the Chittagong Brothers Academy at the MA Aziz Stadium. According to police, he became fully integrated into Sajjad Ali’s criminal network following the political shift on August 5, 2024. His influence within the group grew significantly after the arrest of another prominent lieutenant, Sajjad Hossain, known as Chhoto Sajjad, in March of last year.
