Two Suspects Jailed Following Five-Day Remand in Motijheel Arms Case

A Dhaka court has ordered two alleged high-profile criminals, Tanim Reza Bappi, 46, and Md. Rakibul Islam Bhuiyan Rizon, 35, to be held in custody following the conclusion of their five-day remand in an arms control case. Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Haque issued the detention order on Friday after investigators reported that the suspects provided significant information during their interrogation.
According to the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md. Mohiuddin Masum of Motijheel Police Station, the suspects were initially held on a seven-day remand in connection with an extortion case before being transferred to police custody for the arms investigation. Authorities stated that the suspects were interrogated in accordance with Supreme Court guidelines, and the information obtained is currently being verified as the broader investigation continues.
Police officials argued against the release of the suspects, noting that their potential freedom could jeopardize ongoing inquiries. Given their history of evading authorities, the court granted the prosecution’s request to keep them incarcerated until the investigation reaches its conclusion.
The arrests stem from a series of events beginning in mid-July. On July 17, police apprehended Bappi and Rizon in separate operations in the Motijheel and North Kamalapur areas. A subsequent search of Bappi’s office in South Kamalapur yielded a cache of weapons, including a foreign-made revolver, two pistols, several rounds of ammunition, magazines, an electric shock gun, and a Chinese axe.
The extortion charges were filed by a businessman named Ismail Hossain, who manages a temporary cattle market near the Brothers Union Club in Motijheel. According to court documents, Hossain began receiving threats on WhatsApp on May 15, when the suspects allegedly demanded 10 lakh taka in extortion money and insisted that their associates be given a stake in the market operations.
Hossain alleged that he was threatened with death if he failed to meet these demands. The intimidation escalated on May 19, when unknown assailants reportedly opened fire at Hossain’s office. Following the incident and the subsequent discovery of the weapon cache, police registered separate cases for extortion and violations of the Arms Act.
