Sacked army officer Manzil Haider remanded for 4 days

The court granted a four-day remand to Major (retd.) Manjil Haider Chowdhury (48), a former officer of the Directorate General of Defense Intelligence (DGFI) in the case of the murder of businessman Abdul Wadud in the capital’s Newmarket area during the July agitation. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam gave this order on Friday.

Earlier, the investigation officer of the case and DB police inspector. Amjad Hossain Talukder produced the accused in the court. He applied for a seven-day remand for interrogation. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court Chief Counsel Omar Farooq Farooqui confirmed the matter.

Government counsel Azizul Haque heard the remand for the state in the court. On the other hand, lawyers Sheikh Farid and Kalam Hossain heard the case seeking cancellation of remand and bail. After hearing both sides, the court granted a four-day remand.

The investigating officer mentioned in the remand application that repression was carried out under the orders of senior leaders of Awami League including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader to suppress the anti-discrimination student movement. Manzil Haider Chowdhury assisted in this murder. As he was known to Obaidul Quader, he planned to suppress the movement using the influence of his position. It is alleged that he gave necessary instructions and financial support for this.

According to the details of the case, on July 19, 2024, a student march was fired upon and attacked in the Newmarket area. Businessman Abdul Wadud was shot and died. Abdur Rahman, the brother-in-law of the deceased, filed a murder case against Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader and 130 others as plaintiff.

Earlier, Manzil Haider Chowdhury was arrested from Mohakhali DOHS area of ​​the capital on Thursday.
