A nine-month-old infant died in Mymensingh on Wednesday morning after falling from a bed into rainwater that had inundated his family home. The child, identified as Azlan Amin Talukdar, was asleep beside his mother when the tragedy occurred at his grandfather’s residence in the city’s Brahmapalli area.

The infant’s mother, Bonnya Akter, had been staying at her father’s home with the child for several days. Following heavy rainfall that began Tuesday night, the house was breached by floodwater. As the boy slept on Wednesday morning, he rolled off the bed and into the accumulated water on the floor. Despite the family’s efforts to rush him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

The child’s father, Rezuanul Amin Talukdar, who works for an event management firm, voiced deep frustration over the city’s failing infrastructure. He attributed the death directly to poor drainage management, asserting that the flood would have been avoided had the local systems functioned properly. He called for urgent intervention to prevent further loss of life.

City Administrator Md. Rukonuzzaman visited the grieving family to offer his condolences following the incident. Acknowledging the severity of the waterlogging, he stated that the current drainage issues are a result of record-breaking rainfall. He pledged that city authorities would prioritize the overhaul of the drainage system before the next monsoon season, emphasizing a commitment to ensuring that such a tragedy is not repeated.
