Bangladesh Deploys BGB and Army Across Districts Ahead of Awami League Anniversary

The Bangladeshi government has deployed paramilitary forces and the military across several districts to maintain public order and mitigate security risks surrounding the anniversary of the Awami League, which falls on June 23. Authorities confirmed that Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) units were dispatched to Cox’s Bazar, Madaripur, Sherpur, Gazipur, and Moulvibazar effective Monday. These forces will operate in coordination with local administrations and law enforcement agencies through June 30.

The deployment follows concerns that the now-restricted political organization may attempt to hold unauthorized processions or demonstrations to mark its founding day. To manage the heightened security environment, the government has also deployed the army to Dhaka, Chittagong, and Gazipur metropolitan areas, as well as the districts of Narayanganj, Gopalganj, and Faridpur. These personnel are operating under the “in aid to civil power” mandate, with senior military officers granted special executive magistrate powers to uphold the law.

BGB officials stated that while troops are currently active in the five designated districts, additional units remain on standby to respond to immediate requirements across the country. The border force emphasized its commitment to protecting national interests and ensuring the safety of the general public during this period of potential instability.

In the capital, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has finalized a substantial security plan, mobilizing 18,000 officers to monitor the city and prevent illegal gatherings.
