Actress Koel Mallick Resigns From Rajya Sabha Amidst Trinamool Congress Exodus

Popular Bengali film actress Koel Mallick has resigned from her position as a Rajya Sabha member, marking a swift departure from her brief tenure in national politics. The resignation follows weeks of speculation regarding the actress’s future within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which had nominated her to the upper house earlier this year.

Mallick’s exit follows a broader trend of attrition within the TMC’s parliamentary ranks following the party’s recent setbacks in the West Bengal assembly elections. The resignation adds to a growing list of departures from the party’s Rajya Sabha delegation, which included Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Sushmita Dev, and Prakash Chik Baraik. With Mallick’s departure, the TMC’s representation in the Rajya Sabha has now dwindled from 13 members to nine.

The actress’s entry into politics had initially surprised many, given her previous distance from active political life. When her name appeared on the party’s candidate list in February, it drew significant public attention. Following her formal oath-taking in New Delhi in April, Mallick had framed her legislative role as a “noble responsibility,” emphasizing a commitment to public and national service. Her sudden resignation concludes an abbreviated parliamentary journey that lasted only a few months.
