Rajshahi Jewelers Suspend Operations Following Major Heist at Saheb Bazar Shop

Thieves executed a sophisticated heist at a prominent jewelry store in Rajshahi’s Saheb Bazar gold hub, making off with an estimated 200 bhori of gold, 1,200 bhori of silver, and 2.5 million taka in cash. The burglary at “Karushri Jewellers” was discovered Saturday morning by shop owner Turjo Sarkar, who found his store ransacked after returning to open for business.

Investigators believe the operation took place sometime between Thursday night and Friday night. The perpetrators gained access by first entering the adjacent Afia Jewellers, which was empty at the time, and then cutting through a shared wall to reach the interior of Karushri Jewellers. In a display of calculated precision, the thieves reportedly locked the doors of the neighboring shop upon their departure, a detail police are now investigating as a key element of the crime.

Following the discovery, the Rajshahi chapter of the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) launched an indefinite strike, shuttering all jewelry shops across the city. BAJUS district president Ashraful Islam Raju condemned the incident, demanding the immediate recovery of the stolen goods and the swift apprehension of those responsible. He stated that the strike would remain in effect until these demands are met.

Local authorities, including units from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and a forensics team, have processed the scene for evidence. Police spokesperson and Additional Deputy Commissioner Gaziur Rahman noted that initial reviews of closed-circuit television footage have not yielded clear leads. Investigators are currently awaiting the formal filing of a case by the shop owner to proceed with deeper forensic and digital analysis.

As of Saturday evening, Boalia Police Station officer-in-charge Rabiul Islam confirmed that Turjo Sarkar was in the process of filing an official police complaint. Authorities have pledged to exhaust all investigative avenues, including technical analysis of the crime scene, to identify the suspects involved in the multi-million taka theft.
