IOM Field Engineer Dies in Fatal Generator Accident at Coxs Bazar Refugee Camp

A 29-year-old female engineer died in a tragic workplace accident at a hospital in the Kutupalong refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, on Monday morning.
The victim, Farhana Hoque, a resident of Uttara, Dhaka, was working as a field engineer for the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. at the IOM-run hospital located in Block A-11 of the camp.
According to Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman, the accident took place while Hoque was inspecting the hospital’s operations. Her scarf became entangled in a running generator, which subsequently pulled her hair into the machinery.
Hospital staff provided initial medical treatment to the engineer on-site; however, as her condition deteriorated, she was transferred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. She was pronounced dead while in transit.
Police are currently preparing to release the body to the victim’s family without a post-mortem examination, following a formal request from her relatives. As of Monday evening, the body remained at the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue.
Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman stated that authorities have initiated an investigation to determine how the scarf became caught and whether the generator suffered from any mechanical failure. An unnatural death case is set to be filed at the local police station.
