Brothers clash over property dispute during fathers funeral in Jashore

A violent altercation broke out between two brothers and their family members over a land dispute while their father’s body lay awaiting burial in Keshobpur, Jessore, on Monday. The clash left four people injured, prompting an investigation by local authorities.

The incident occurred in Sannyasgachha village around midday following the death of 75-year-old Khalek Man. Family members confirmed that the elder man had passed away from age-related complications earlier that morning. Tensions reportedly escalated over the distribution of property, as Khalek Man had deeded 18 decimals of land near the Chuknagar-Gourighona road to his eldest son, Mahbubur Rahman, 52, and 15 decimals, including the family home, to his younger son, Asabul, 45.

Asabul alleged that his brother had manipulated their father into granting him the more valuable property along the main road. This long-standing grievance turned physical after the father’s death when a disagreement arose regarding where the deceased should be buried.

According to Asabul, he was assaulted by his brother and his brother’s sons while attempting to discuss burial arrangements at the family graveyard. Asabul sustained a head injury, and his wife, Halima, was allegedly struck with a wooden club during the confrontation.

Mahbubur Rahman denied the accusations, claiming that he had no intention of preventing the burial. He asserted that Asabul and his associates initiated the attack when questioned about the funeral plans. Mahbubur and his wife, Momtaz, later sought medical attention for their injuries after completing their father’s burial ceremony in the afternoon.

All four injured individuals were admitted to the Keshobpur Upazila Health Complex for treatment. A video of the altercation has since circulated on social media platforms, drawing local attention to the family feud.

Keshobpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Reksona Khatun stated that law enforcement officers were dispatched to the scene to restore order and ensure the burial proceeded. Police have instructed both parties to file formal complaints, promising that legal action will be taken once the allegations are processed.
