Bangladeshi youth killed in landmine explosion along Myanmar border

A 25-year-old Bangladeshi man was killed in a landmine explosion inside Myanmar territory near the Dochhari border in Naikhongchhari, Bandarban, on Monday morning.
The victim, identified as Saiful Islam, a resident of the Painchhari area, reportedly crossed the international border line to collect bamboo. According to local officials and police, the incident occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m., roughly 400 meters inside Myanmar, near border pillar 52.
Saiful Islam was part of a group of six individuals from Painchhari who had crossed into the Duilyaziri area of Myanmar. The explosion caused severe injuries, resulting in the amputation of both of the victim’s feet. Although his companions managed to transport him to the Naikhongchhari Upazila Health Complex, medical staff declared him dead upon arrival.
Police reports indicate that the incident site falls under the jurisdiction of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 11th Battalion’s Targupara border outpost. The area across the border is reportedly under the influence of the Arakan Army, an insurgent group operating within Myanmar.
While authorities state that the border situation remains calm following the blast, the presence of landmines planted by insurgent groups has raised significant security concerns. Local law enforcement officials emphasized that such explosives pose a persistent threat to the safety of Bangladeshi residents living in border regions.
Naikhongchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mozammel Haque confirmed that legal procedures are underway to return the victim’s body to his family. Authorities have issued a stern warning to residents of the border villages, urging them to exercise caution and avoid traversing high-risk zones. Security officials have also called for increased BGB patrols to prevent further casualties.
