Investigation report in Sagar-Runi murder case delayed for 129th time as court sets new deadline

The investigation report into the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi has been delayed once again, marking the 129th time the deadline for submission has been extended.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court, presided over by Ariful Islam, set September 30 as the new date for the submission of the report after the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) failed to present its findings on Thursday. Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) prosecution division confirmed the development to the media.
Sagar Sarowar, a news editor at Machranga Television, and his wife Meherun Runi, a senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were murdered in their rented apartment in the capital’s West Rajabazar area on February 11, 2012. Following the incident, Runi’s brother, Nausher Alam, filed a murder case at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
The investigation was initially conducted by local police before being transferred to the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Subsequently, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) was assigned to lead the probe. After twelve years of inconclusive investigations by multiple agencies, the responsibility for the case was handed over to the PBI, which took over the official case documents from RAB in November last year.
