Expatriate journalist receives death threat in Kushtia files police complaint

A journalist residing abroad has filed a formal police complaint after receiving a death threat at his family home in Bheramara, Kushtia. The journalist, Hasan Imam Ibne Habib, reported that he received a letter on Wednesday warning him to cease his writing or face fatal consequences.
The complaint, filed as a General Diary (GD) at the Bheramara Police Station, states that the letter was discovered early Wednesday morning after being slipped under the main gate of the journalist’s family residence in Hirimdiya village. The message, signed by a group identifying itself as “Tawhidi Janata,” expressed grievances regarding his recent social media posts, comments, and journalistic work.
The contents of the letter reportedly contained personal details and information regarding the journalist’s movements, raising concerns that he is being actively monitored. The sender explicitly threatened his life if he did not stop his public commentary, noting that they were aware of his professional identity and his movements in both Dhaka and his home district.
Hasan Imam, who is currently visiting Bangladesh from abroad with his family, stated that he does not know the identity of the perpetrators. In his filing, he requested that authorities investigate the origin of the letter and identify those responsible for the intimidation.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bheramara Police Station, Mohammad Jahedur Rahman, confirmed the filing of the complaint and stated that the matter is being treated with high priority. The police have held discussions with the journalist and advised him to exercise caution and maintain contact with local law enforcement. According to police, the journalist has since traveled to Dhaka and is scheduled to return abroad next month.
