Police arrest prime suspect as skeletal remains in Joypurhat identified as missing auto-rickshaw driver

Police in Joypurhat have confirmed that skeletal remains discovered in a sugarcane field in the Jitapur intersection area belong to Farid Hossain, an easy-bike driver who had been missing since August 20. Authorities arrested the primary suspect, 27-year-old Sagar Hossain, on Wednesday afternoon near the Atrai Railway Station in Naogaon following a joint operation by the Rapid Action Battalion and local police.
The victim’s father, Abdul Kuddus, reported that Farid, a resident of Hopeerhat village in Khetlal Upazila, went missing after leaving home with his vehicle on the morning of August 20. After failing to locate his son, Kuddus filed a general diary with the police. Following an investigation, police recovered the stolen easy-bike from a garage in the Pakar Matha area on Monday and arrested two individuals, Rabiul and Zakir Hossain.
The investigation intensified after local residents discovered human remains being dragged onto a road near a sugarcane field by jackals on Tuesday morning. Upon inspection, the remains were identified as Farid’s based on clothing found at the scene. Following a post-mortem examination at Joypurhat General Hospital and the collection of DNA samples, the remains were released to the family and buried on Tuesday night.
Investigators are currently probing how the remains reached a skeletal state in only five days. Authorities suspect that chemical substances may have been used to expedite the decomposition of the body following the murder.
Khetlal Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Abdul Karim confirmed that the victim’s family identified the remains through the personal effects recovered at the scene. Joypurhat Superintendent of Police Shahnaz Begum stated that the interrogation of the primary suspect, Sagar, is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death and the rapid decomposition of the body.
