Following the incident, local residents and family members launched a search operation, recovering both children within 30 minutes. They were rushed to the Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians declared them dead upon arrival.

According to classmates, the two boys were part of a group of six friends who went to the river to swim after playing football. Witness Sakib Hasan stated that while Makhmudul knew how to swim, Moktasin did not. When Moktasin drifted into deeper water, he grabbed Makhmudul, causing both to struggle and sink.
