Minority groups demand judicial probe into murder of Rangpur teacher family

A coalition of advocacy groups held a demonstration outside the National Press Club in Dhaka on Wednesday, demanding a judicial inquiry into the brutal murder of a family of four in Rangpur.

Protesters led by the Bangladesh Sanatan Party (BSP), joined by members of the Bhakta Sangha Society Bangladesh, the World Hindu Federation, and several other organizations, gathered to express outrage over the deaths of retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakrabarty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakrabarty, 50, their daughter Agami Chakrabarty, 25, and their son Ayush Chakrabarty, 13. The bodies of the victims were discovered by police at their home in the Mashuapara area on the night of August 22. While authorities have arrested two suspects, Siddhartha Das, 19, and Mugdha Das, 23, in connection with the case, activists are calling for a more rigorous judicial investigation to uncover the true motive behind the killings.

Suman Kumar Roy, General Secretary of the BSP, presented a six-point list of demands during the rally. The organization called for swift and impartial investigations into all recent homicides, the expedited trial of perpetrators through special tribunals, and a formal judicial inquiry into the Rangpur murders. Furthermore, the group urged the government to suppress rising crime rates, including theft and robbery, while demanding an immediate crackdown on extremist activities and the assurance of full security and religious freedom for minority communities.

Speakers at the event highlighted a growing sense of insecurity among the public, citing a combination of economic instability and the breakdown of law and order. Ujjwal Prasad Kanu, General Secretary of the Deshwali Samaj, stated that citizens no longer feel safe in their own homes, pointing to the compounding pressures of utility shortages, inflation, and a surge in violent crime as primary sources of public anxiety.

Other prominent figures addressing the rally included Bhakta Sangha Society General Secretary Anil Pal, BSP Senior Joint General Secretary Pranotosh Talukdar, and Santosh Chandra Das, all of whom reiterated the demand for the state to prioritize the protection of all citizens and ensure justice for the victims.
