Police investigate family property dispute in murder of former Bhairab youth leader Al Amin

BHAIRAB, Kishoreganj — Police have launched a formal investigation into the murder of Al Amin, a former local Jubo League leader, after a case was filed by his wife at Bhairab Police Station on Wednesday, three days after the fatal attack.

Al Amin, 40, who served as the general secretary of the Bhairab municipal wing of the Jubo League, was also a former municipal councillor for Ward 1 and a former director of the Bhairab Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He was attacked late Sunday night in the Tinpatti area of the municipality and succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital at approximately 3:00 a.m. on Monday.

The murder case filed by his wife, Tania Khanam, names eight individuals as suspects, with an additional 10 to 12 unidentified persons also listed. Sub-Inspector Nurul Huda Bhuiyan, in-charge of the Bhairab Town Outpost, confirmed the filing of the case but declined to release the suspects’ identities, noting that the individuals named in the complaint are family members.

Investigators are prioritizing family disputes over property as the primary motive. According to the victim’s family, Al Amin had been embroiled in a long-standing property dispute involving his cousins, Hassan and Jumman, the sons of his uncle Momen Miah. The dispute concerned the ownership of a family property known as “Fakir Market.” Tania Khanam stated that her husband identified Hassan and Jumman as his attackers before he died.

Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage to reconstruct the sequence of events. While the specific scene of the assault was not captured by cameras, audio recorded by nearby surveillance equipment is being analyzed. Footage indicates that Al Amin left his hotel, Riverview, at 11:38 p.m. on Sunday and was intercepted by attackers shortly after passing the Gopal Jiu Temple area.

Investigators are working to determine whether the suspects had been lying in wait or were tracking the victim. Although no weapons or forensic evidence have been recovered from the scene, authorities are tracking the escape routes of the perpetrators through additional camera networks.

Following the incident, Momen Miah’s family members have reportedly vacated their residence, leaving it locked with their mobile phones turned off. An associate of the family claimed that the property dispute had been mediated recently by local BNP leadership, though investigators maintain that the internal family conflict remains the focal point of the probe.

Al Amin, who had been involved in fertilizer distribution and hospitality, had faced several legal cases following the events of August 5, 2024, and had previously served time in jail before being released on bail. Police stated they are close to confirming the exact number of attackers involved but are withholding further details to preserve the integrity of the investigation.
