Court grants five-day remand for three suspects in death of headteacher following attempted robbery near National Parliament House

A Dhaka court on Monday placed three suspects on a five-day remand in connection with the death of school principal Ronjila Parvin, who died after being thrown from an autorickshaw during a purse-snatching attempt near the South Plaza of the National Parliament House.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Siddiq Azad granted the remand following an application submitted by the police. The suspects identified are Poni, alias Para Poni, his accomplice Cedric Julian, 24, and Md. Rakib Hossain, 24, the owner of the motorcycle used during the crime. Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) prosecution department confirmed the court’s order.
The investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Shahin of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, had requested a 10-day remand to uncover the underlying details of the incident, identify unidentified accomplices, and locate the primary figures involved. While defense attorneys, led by Amir Uddin Amir, sought to cancel the remand and requested bail for their clients, the prosecution successfully opposed the motion.
The victim, 56-year-old Ronjila Parvin, served as the head teacher at Bagbari Government Girls’ Primary School in the Gabtoli Upazila of Bogura. She was traveling to Dhaka with her husband, Abdul Matin, to seek medical treatment for an eye condition at the Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital in the Farmgate area.
The couple arrived at the Kalyanpur bus terminal from Bogura early Friday morning and hired an autorickshaw to reach the hospital. As they passed the South Plaza of the Parliament House, assailants on a motorcycle pulled alongside the vehicle and attempted to snatch Parvin’s handbag. The force of the tug caused Parvin to fall from the autorickshaw, resulting in a fatal head injury. She was rushed to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Her husband, Abdul Matin, subsequently filed a case at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
