Police arrest three more suspects in connection with Taraganj mob killing case

Police in Taraganj, Rangpur, have arrested three additional suspects in connection with the mob beating deaths of 40-year-old Ruplal Das and 35-year-old Pradip Lal. The arrests bring the total number of individuals taken into custody in the case to 18.
The suspects, identified as 26-year-old Shahinur Islam, 24-year-old Shahin Hossain, and 32-year-old Alamin Hossain, were apprehended during a raid at their homes in Barapur village under Sayer Union at approximately 3:00 a.m. on Sunday.
Taraganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ruhul Amin confirmed that investigators identified the trio through a combination of video footage analysis and witness statements. The suspects had remained in hiding since the incident occurred last year. Following their arrest, they were produced before a court on Monday afternoon and subsequently remanded to jail.
The legal proceedings began on August 10 of last year, when Ruplal Das’s wife, Bharati Rani, filed a case naming over 700 unidentified individuals as suspects. Police have since utilized digital evidence and community intelligence to narrow the investigation, leading to the arrest of 15 other suspects prior to Sunday’s operation. Authorities confirmed that efforts to locate and apprehend the remaining suspects are ongoing.
The incident took place on the night of August 9 of last year. Ruplal Das was traveling by van with his niece’s husband, Pradip Lal, who had arrived from the Charon Balua area of Mithapukur. While passing through Burirhat Bottola intersection in Sayer Union, a group of locals intercepted the pair. During an interrogation, the crowd searched a bag in Pradip’s possession, discovering a bottle of liquid and medication. When the bottle was opened, the emanating odor led several locals to believe they were being poisoned.
An enraged mob subsequently dragged both men to a nearby school field and beat them severely. Following their rescue, the victims were transported to the Taraganj Health Complex, where Ruplal Das was declared dead upon arrival. Pradip Lal succumbed to his injuries the following morning while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
