IoT Technology Integration Reduces Operational Costs for Poultry Farmer in Jashore

ABHAYNAGAR, Jashore — A poultry farmer in Jashore has achieved significant cost reductions and operational efficiency by integrating Internet of Things (IoT) technology into his broiler farm, setting a new standard for local agricultural practices.

Polash Kumar Mondal, a resident of Bagutia village in the Abhaynagar Upazila, currently manages 3,000 broiler chickens using an automated system that allows him to monitor and control farm conditions remotely. Through a smartphone application, Mondal manages temperature, water supply, lighting, and ventilation without needing to be physically present on-site.

The implementation of this technology has eliminated the need for a full-time farmhand, saving Mondal approximately 12,000 taka in monthly wages. Additional savings on electricity and maintenance costs have reduced his total monthly production expenses by 14,000 to 15,000 taka. Before adopting the IoT system six months ago, Mondal struggled to balance his poultry operations with his separate fish farming business due to the excessive labor hours required at the chicken shed.

The IoT infrastructure, which includes sensors, CCTV cameras, and specialized software, was provided at no cost to Mondal through a pilot program by the non-governmental organization Nabolok Parishad. According to Prosun Biswas, a livestock officer at Nabolok Parishad, the initiative is funded by the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF). The installation of the hardware and software carries a market value of 50,000 taka.

Mondal’s success has attracted the attention of other local farmers, such as Faisal Sarder and Mohammad Anarul Molla, who are now seeking guidance on modernizing their own farms. Local stakeholders are calling on the government to provide incentives or subsidies to make this technology more accessible to marginalized farmers.

While there are over 300 poultry farms operating in Abhaynagar, local officials note that Mondal is currently the only farmer in the region utilizing this level of digital integration. Md. Towhidul Islam, the Upazila Livestock Officer, confirmed that the digital transition has yielded positive results for Mondal’s operations.

The program, which selected three entrepreneurs across the Jashore and Khulna regions to receive the technology as an incentive, is being viewed as a potential model for broader digital transformation in the rural poultry sector.
