AI-Powered Traffic Enforcement System Issues 441 Fines on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in First 24 Hours

Authorities have filed cases against 441 vehicles within the first 24 hours of implementing an artificial intelligence-based automated ticketing system on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway. The initiative, which seeks to enhance road safety through digital enforcement, resulted in 399 penalties for speeding, while an additional 29 cases were issued for driving in the wrong direction.

The system was launched on Tuesday morning, and officials reported the total count of infractions as of 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday. According to Highway Police, 13 of the initially detected cases were subsequently cancelled upon review.

Shahinur Alam Khan, Superintendent of Police for the Comilla Region of the Highway Police, confirmed the enforcement data. He noted that the introduction of the automated system has already fostered greater caution among motorists, leading to a visible decline in traffic violations by the second day of operation.

The AI-driven camera network is currently configured to detect three specific types of traffic violations: excessive speeding, driving against the flow of traffic, and illegal parking. Officials noted that the vast majority of the penalties processed during the initial rollout were directly attributed to speeding.

Looking ahead, police officials intend to expand the scope of the AI monitoring system. Superintendent Khan indicated that the types of traffic offenses tracked by the cameras will be increased in the future, aiming to more effectively identify and curb illegal activity on the nation’s major highway corridors.
