AI-Generated Image Falsely Depicts Bangladesh Pink Bus Accident Following Collision Rumors

DHAKA — A viral social media claim alleging that a newly inaugurated women-only bus service, known as the “Pink Bus,” was pushed into a roadside ditch by a Hanif Paribahan vehicle has been debunked as a digitally manipulated fabrication.
The Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) recently launched the Pink Bus service in Dhaka, Chattogram, and Bogura, featuring female drivers and conductors to ensure safer transit for women. Following the launch on August 18, images circulated across more than 70 Facebook pages and groups depicting a pink bus in a ditch alongside a bus bearing the Hanif brand, with captions claiming the vehicle was struck on its first day of operation.
Investigations reveal that the image is a product of artificial intelligence and digital editing. Forensic analysis of the viral photograph shows that it was created by superimposing graphics onto an older, unrelated accident report. The original image, which matches the scene in the doctored version, depicts an accident that occurred on March 16 on the Barishal-Kuakata highway. In that incident, an Islam Paribahan bus collided with a truck in Bakerganj, causing the bus to veer into a ditch.
While the viral claim of a collision with a Hanif bus is false, the Pink Bus service did experience a minor, separate incident during its inaugural day. Reports confirmed that a Balaka Paribahan bus struck a Pink Bus near the MES area in Dhaka after it passed the Banani neighborhood.
Rafiqul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Traffic Tejgaon Division, confirmed that the Balaka Paribahan vehicle involved in the minor collision was impounded and its operators were fined 5,000 taka. No casualties were reported in that incident.
Authorities confirmed that there have been no reports of Pink Bus vehicles being forced off the road by Hanif Paribahan in Dhaka, Chattogram, or Bogura. The viral narrative appears to be an attempt to spread misinformation using AI-generated or manipulated content to capitalize on the recent launch of the women-exclusive transport initiative.
