Rajshahi University Chhatra Dal Demands Probe Into Alleged Misappropriation of RAKSU Funds

RAJSHAHI, Bangladesh — Activists from the Rajshahi University unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) staged a protest march and rally on Thursday evening, leveling allegations of financial embezzlement against the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU).
The protest commenced at approximately 8:00 p.m. at the university’s Transport Market. Participants marched through various campus thoroughfares before gathering in front of the Administration Building to demand transparency and a formal investigation into the alleged misappropriation of student union funds. During the rally, protesters chanted slogans criticizing the RUCSU leadership and calling for a full account of expenditures.
Mahmudul Hasan Mithu, organizing secretary of the university unit of JCD, challenged the legitimacy of the current leadership’s spending. He alleged that the Vice President of RUCSU had withdrawn 1.3 million taka despite failing to secure a mandate of 12,000 to 13,000 votes. He further claimed that an excess of 800,000 taka had been reported in the accounts without justification, demanding that the leadership account for these discrepancies.
Senior Vice President of the unit, Shakilur Rahman Sohag, directed criticism toward the RUCSU treasurer, alleging that the funds were being used to support illicit activities. He claimed that student union resources were being funneled through individuals he characterized as having ties to other political factions on campus.
Sultan Ahmed Rahi, president of the JCD university unit, cited specific instances of alleged financial inflation. Rahi claimed that while JCD spent approximately 50,000 taka to set up LED screens for World Cup viewings, RUCSU reported expenditures of 380,000 taka for similar arrangements. Additionally, he alleged that RUCSU claimed to have spent 300,000 taka on admission test help desks, a task he asserted typically costs between 1,000 and 1,500 taka.
Rahi demanded that the university administration immediately form an investigation committee to audit the RUCSU accounts and recover any funds found to have been misappropriated.
According to records from the office of the RUCSU treasurer, representatives had withdrawn a total of 12.9 million taka for 42 separate initiatives. Of that amount, bills and vouchers for 6.15 million taka have yet to be submitted to the administration. The protest concluded at approximately 8:45 p.m.
