Former Education Minister Dipu Moni Returns to Munshiganj Jail After Parole for Husbands Funeral

Former Education Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dipu Moni returned to Munshiganj District Jail on Thursday evening after being granted a 12-hour parole to attend her husband’s funeral. Dipu Moni, who is currently incarcerated in connection with multiple cases related to the 2024 mass uprising, arrived back at the prison facility at 5:55 p.m.
Her husband, senior Supreme Court lawyer Taufiq Nawaz, passed away on Tuesday night at a private hospital in the capital while undergoing treatment for long-standing kidney and liver complications. Following the death, Dipu Moni’s legal counsel, Gazi Faisal Islam, filed a petition on Wednesday seeking a four-day parole. Subsequently, Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Syeda Nurmahal Ashrafi granted a 12-hour parole, effective from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Dipu Moni was released from the Munshiganj prison at approximately 6:15 a.m. under heavy police escort. She was transported via prison van to her residence in the Kalabagan area of Dhaka, where she paid her final respects to her husband. The funeral prayer for Taufiq Nawaz was held at the Gulshan Azad Mosque following the Zohr prayers, and he was laid to rest at the Banani Graveyard at approximately 2:45 p.m.
Munshiganj District Jail Superintendent Jannat-ul-Farhad confirmed that the authorities began the return transport of the former minister shortly after the burial was completed.
Dipu Moni has been held in the Munshiganj District Jail since her arrest in cases linked to the 2024 political uprising. While incarcerated, she had previously petitioned for permission to visit her ailing husband outside of prison, but those requests were denied. During past court appearances, Taufiq Nawaz had traveled on a stretcher to see his wife while she was being presented before the bench.
