Ashuganj Rape and Murder Case Filed As Relative Arrested and Sent to Court
Police arrested a distant relative of the victim after angry locals clashed with law enforcement during the suspects extraction from a wedding ceremony venue in Brahmanbaria
A formal case has been filed in connection with the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in Ashuganj upazila of Brahmanbaria, drawing intense local outrage and triggering a violent confrontation with law enforcement. The victim's mother lodged the murder and rape charges at the local police station on Saturday afternoon, naming an 18-year-old distant relative of the child as the prime suspect. Police have formally arrested the accused and forwarded him to the court, while the victim was laid to rest at her family graveyard on Friday night following an autopsy at the Brahmanbaria General Hospital morgue.
According to police, local residents, and the victim's family, the tragedy unfolded on Friday during a wedding ceremony at the family home. The suspect allegedly lured the six-year-old victim—a student of the Nazera department at a local Madrasa—into his room on the pretext of fetching drinking water, where he reportedly raped and killed her before lingering outside his doorstep. The victim's mother discovered the grim reality after returning home from a doctor's visit with her younger son. Growing suspicious upon spotting her daughter's shoes outside the suspect's door despite his denials, she entered the room to find the child unconscious with her hands and feet bound. Relatives rushed the victim to Brahmanbaria General Hospital, where attending physicians pronounced her dead.
The incident sparked immediate and volatile public fury, with an estimated three to four thousand enraged locals surrounding the house where the suspect was holed up. As law enforcement units rushed to the scene around mid-afternoon, the crowd began hurling brickbats at the police, leading to pitched running battles and police baton charges to regain control. Reinforcements, including Detective Branch (DB) personnel and additional forces from the district headquarters, were subsequently deployed to manage the escalating crisis.
Amid persistent attempts by the mob to snatch and lynch the suspect, police—supported by local politicians and community members—escorted the accused out of the building wearing a protective helmet at around 5:30 PM. Brahmanbaria Superintendent of Police Shah Md. Abdur Rouf confirmed that the suspect admitted his involvement during initial interrogations, noting that heavy police intervention was essential to rescue the accused from the violent mob and secure him in police custody.
