France is set to deploy military personnel and advanced defense systems to safeguard the critical Saudi Arabian port city of Yanbu along the Red Sea coast amid escalating regional threats. French President Emmanuel Macron announced the strategic deployment during a televised interview addressing pressing international developments and energy security.
President Macron emphasized that the protective military package for Saudi Arabia will comprise ground troops, radar installations, and defensive hardware. However, the French leader explicitly clarified that the deployment is strictly defensive in nature and is not intended to entangle France in ongoing regional conflicts. The Red Sea port has increasingly become a vital lifeline for Saudi oil exports, particularly as shipping operations face disruptions and the Strait of Hormuz remains constrained. The port of Yanbu has recently found itself vulnerable to missile attacks launched by Yemen-based Houthi rebels, compounding global anxieties and driving up crude oil prices on international markets.
Addressing broader economic and energy anxieties, President Macron sought to reassure French citizens grappling with soaring domestic fuel costs, affirming that France has secured sufficient natural gas and oil reserves to navigate the upcoming winter comfortably. He underscored that his administration is actively maintaining uninterrupted energy supplies to insulate the public from market volatility.
During the wide-ranging interview, the French President also addressed global trade and energy policies, cautioning that potential restrictions on diesel exports by the United States would inflict severe shocks on both the domestic American economy and the wider global market if implemented. He noted these concerns following media reports regarding possible US export bans, although the White House has since officially refuted such plans.
