Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched a fierce verbal assault against New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during his address at the United Nations General Assembly in the United States, branding the city leader an anti-Semite and accusing him of spreading falsehoods about the Israeli military. The confrontation, widely anticipated prior to the session, unfolded on Thursday as the Israeli leader vehemently rejected mounting international accusations of genocide in Gaza and accused the American mayor of attempting to silence him.
During his speech, Prime Minister Netanyahu condemned Mayor Mamdani for previously labeling him a war criminal, utilizing sharp rhetorical language to denounce the city administration. Shame on you for distorting the truth, shame on you for inverting the victim and the aggressor, and shame on you for spitting in the face of the truth, the Israeli Prime Minister declared from the podium. He further asserted that since Mayor Mamdani assumed office, numerous Jewish residents in New York have expressed profound apprehension regarding their safety, telling him that the metropolitan area has transformed rapidly and no longer resembles the city they once knew.
Prime Minister Netanyahu also alleged that the New York City Mayor repeatedly leveled false genocide allegations against Israel and actively attempted to obstruct his visit and suppress his voice. Refuting all culpability in the ongoing Gaza conflict, the Israeli leader maintained that his nation did not commit genocide but rather prevented one. Israel has consistently denied allegations of perpetrating atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza, maintaining that its military operations target solely Hamas fighters who allegedly use civilians as human shields. In his address, Prime Minister Netanyahu went a step further by characterizing Mayor Mamdani as a friend of Hamas.
In response to the sharp accusations, representatives for Mayor Mamdani noted that the New York City Mayor does not support Hamas and has repeatedly condemned anti-Semitism in the strongest possible terms. The mayor's camp has maintained that legitimate criticisms directed against Israeli state policies and military aggression are frequently and deliberately conflated with anti-Semitism.
