Woman dies after falling into open drain in Gazipur

A 42-year-old woman died in Gazipur on Sunday after falling into an open roadside drain during heavy rainfall. The victim, Nazma Khatun, was navigating the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway near the Bhogra bypass when the accident occurred.
Witnesses reported that heavy afternoon rains caused significant waterlogging along the highway, obscuring the open drain associated with the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. Because the drain’s cover had been removed and the opening was submerged by floodwater, Khatun inadvertently stepped into the gap and was swept away. Bystanders attempted to rescue her immediately but were unable to reach her in the turbulent water.

Her body surfaced nearly 45 minutes later at a location some distance from where she initially fell. Local residents recovered her and rushed her to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
Harunur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Bason Police Station, confirmed that the body has been sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy. Authorities stated that legal proceedings regarding the incident are currently underway.

This fatality highlights a recurring safety crisis in Gazipur’s infrastructure. A similar incident occurred last year in the Tongi area, where a woman named Faria Tasnim disappeared after falling into an open drain. Her body was recovered by the Fire Service three days later from a marshland located approximately one kilometer from the site of her fall.
