A quiet village in the Kamarkhanda upazila of Sirajganj was rocked by a burglary early Sunday morning as thieves targeted a family home, dismantling both a security perimeter and a profound connection to the past. The incident occurred at the residence of retired schoolteacher Monirul Islam and his brother Mahmudul Hasan in Rasulpur village, where intruders gained access by cutting through window grilles.

The thieves systematically ransacked the home before forcing open a heavy, antique iron safe located in Maksudul Hasan’s bedroom. According to Akhi Khatun, the wife of Mahmudul Hasan, the intruders made off with approximately 1.25 bhori of gold jewelry and a sum of cash, totaling a loss of roughly 250,000 taka. Khatun discovered the breach upon waking at dawn, finding the door panels damaged and the interior belongings strewn across the rooms.

While the financial loss is significant, the family expressed deep emotional distress over the violation of a cherished heirloom. The safe, which had been in the family’s possession for decades, was preserved as a memorial to their late parents, Ali Ashraf Mondal and Mouluda Khatun. According to Monirul Islam, the family had consciously left the safe untouched following their parents’ deaths, treating the contents and the antique container itself as a sacred repository of family history.

The safe’s history dates back to Monirul Islam’s childhood, when his father purchased it from a neighbor during a major flood and transported it to their home by boat. Following the passing of his mother in 2018, the siblings, including Maksudul Hasan and Mizanur Rahman, maintained the safe in its original state to honor their parents’ legacy. For the family, the theft of the cash and the destruction of the safe represents the loss of a tangible link to their heritage that can never be recovered.
